This past 25th of September the Vindel Parchment began its journey from the Morgan Library and Museum in New York to the Museo Del Mar in Vigo. There, it will be on display until next March.
Our Secondary School students will visit the display on the 8th century manuscript. The Vindel Parchment is a precious piece of literature which conserves seven love songs written in Galician-Portuguese. The songs were composed for female vocals by renowned medieval joglar Martín Códax.
Although the works have survived in other documents, such as the Anthology of the National Library of Spain or the “Cancioneiro da Ajuda”, this is the only record which has musical notation. In fact, in all the works of medieval Galician-Portuguese poetry, these are the only female vocals that have survived with original musical notation.
