O Castro British School will host the second edition of the meeting
After the success of its first edition, the II School Debate Event is already underway, a tournament that will promote the dialectic capacity of children, their oratory and their argumentation skills.
This second edition, the event is loaded with new features that will undoubtedly make us enjoy this fantastic exhibition even more. The main novelty is that it will be developed under the British Parliament (BP) format, one of the most widely used debate competition modalities worldwide. The particularity of this model is that the issues to be discussed are not announced in advance, but that they are known at the same time as the competition takes place, leaving the participants 15 minutes to prepare the position they have to defend. This position (for or against) will also be drawn on the same day of the Meeting.
That is why, in this modality, in addition to helping our young students to become citizens with a critical spirit, analytical and communicative capacity; it also favours their ability to improvise, emphasizing the argumentation and reasoning against the documentation work proper to the modality of academic debate.
Another novelty of this second edition of the Meeting is that all the motions (this is the name of the debate topics in the BP modality) will be about a film, INVICTUS, a great cinematographic work directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. It tells the story of how Nelson Mandela, newly appointed president, tries to unite his compatriots after the fall of apartheid in South Africa by organizing the World Rugby Championship. So we recommend a movie and popcorn session before attending the event.
The tournament will take place in two days, on Saturday 4 and May 11, and will involve 32 teams, composed of two members each, representing different educational centres and associations of Vigo and its surroundings.
This year the Organization of the Oratory and Debate Club (CODE) association, recently created, takes over the organization of the Encounter and is sponsored by O Castro British School, the City Council of Mos and WEDU.
Oratory Contest: A new space for the little ones
But there are even more news, as with the aim of bringing the oratory and the debate to the youngest, this second edition also includes an Oratory Contest aimed at children from 3rd to 6th grade of primary school enrolled in those schools or institutions that participate in the II School Debate Event, as well as public, private and concerted schools of the City of Mos and metropolitan area of Vigo.
All participants in the contest will record on video a 2-minute speech on the theme “The magic of sport.” Once the video has been sent to the organization, a committee of evaluators will assess issues of form and substance such as the use of the voice, the structure, the presentation of ideas, captivating beginnings or endings, among others.
